An Industry Perspective
The Ride Theft Question

November 2, 2013 No Comments

One of the most frustrating and ongoing battles an FEC operator faces is controlling theft on their attractions.  While it often starts as giving a friend a free ride, it can quickly progress to multiple ride attendants taking a few dollars for a ride at the attraction and pocketing it, stealing admission dollars from the owners.

The worst part of this is that the owner not only loses the sales, he often loses key employees that get caught doing the same theft because they resented the new guy getting “extra money” and getting away with it.  One person stealing can quickly escalate into multiple employees stealing rides and great revenue loss.  The author of this article once caught an employee trying to buy an automobile with stolen tickets in the location’s  parking lot!

Owners are always looking for a better way to track ride usage for go-karts, bumper cars and other diversions to track theft and prevent the loss of employees. At the end of the day, people can jump turn styles, enter through the exit, stay on the ride and wave money at the attendant, etc. and allow the employee to steal from the company. This theft will go undetected until someone actually sees the theft happening because there was not a way to track the vehicle usage.

Technology has finally solved this problem.  By combining the Thunder Volt Operating System (gas or electric go karts) with wireless swipe card readers attached to each vehicle, Amusement Products has created a way to prevent this theft.  Unless a card is swiped on the kart, the kart will not operate for the next ride.   Not only does the POS system track every use of the vehicle, it eliminates theft and the loss of employees. -
