Taking a break to eat adds immeasurable enjoyment to the guest experience, and past surveys have indicated that food and beverage can account for between 30 and 40 percent of revenues. Understanding this segment of your business is therefore crucial, and each spring we examine food service in a variety of leisure entertainment settings. For 2013, you can read about changes in the dining formula for large parks, satisfying hungry bowling customers, food equipment that works for mini-golf and go-kart facilities, getting the food equation right at laser tag centers, trends in coin-op coffee and healthy snacks, , food service at zoos and aquariums and more.

Johnny Rockets and Subway are some of the biggest names in food service today. In two special features, we get advice on theming from Johnny Rockets and the franchise development picture from Subway.
Waterparks prepare for the busy summer all year, starting with when the gates close at the end of the summer. In the Waves section, we offer a look at how these parks approach maintenance and refurbishing to make sure the guests have the best experience possible when they return each year. Included in the section is a special sidebar on best water filtration practices. Zoos also are always looking for ways to freshen up the grounds and exhibits. In the Zoo and Aquarium section, we look at how these popular attractions get ready for the bigger influx of guests that arrive each summer.
The low-tech activity of roller skating remains a mainstay for family fun. In a special roller skating feature, we examine current trends for roller skating facilities. Other fun, simple activities can be on the roster for corporate parties. We offer a story on how party rental companies are capturing corporate business in the Amusement Rental/Inflatable News section.
Our staff members attended the Nightclub & Bar, NICA and Gibsonton trade shows and we offer special show coverage in this issue. Additionally, we wish congratulations to the 2013 winners of Tourist Attractions & Parks’ second annual Excellence in Family Entertainment Center Awards. Bestowed during the 2013 Amusement Expo in March and sponsored in conjunction with Foundations Entertainment University, the awards recognize centers that are upholding high standards for excellence. Edison’s Entertainment Complex in Edwardsville, Ill., won for Best New Center, and Funplex Amusement Center in East Hanover, N.J., won for Best Remodeled Center.
