Learning the Lessons of the Season

September 12, 2012 No Comments

Waterparks were the place to be last summer, as record heat in many parts of the country drove families toward places to cool off and relax. In this issue’s Waves section, we offer a profile of the Hawaiian Falls Waterpark and also a look at how indoor waterparks around the country are theming and re-theming to increase guest satisfaction.
The fall can be a time to assess the successes and failures of the summer season and to take note of how to make improvements for next year. For all types of leisure entertainment facilities, staffing is a constant challenge. In this issue, we examine how optimal seasonal staffing is achieved at zoos in an article that is useful now and in the future.
One-price admission has long been a staple practice in the amusement park industry. In this issue’s Large Park Report, Contributor Chad Emerson examines how parks are generating revenue beyond the gate price with surcharge attractions, including climbing walls and ziplines.
The add-on attraction of food continues to also be an important part of keeping guests satisfied and entertained. In the Food Service Spotlight section, our contributor examines fast food trends at family entertainment centers.
Inflatable amusement safety is a top-of-mind concern for the industry. In this issue, we offer advice for best safety practices.
Additionally, in the Family Entertainment Center Report, you will find a special report from the BPAA, a look at how themed bowling centers are balancing style with the sport, and an article about the strategy of offering a combination of inflatables, mini-golf and go-karts. Also, in the area of technology, we offer advice on investing in high technology at haunted attractions.

Janice Weiss, 1920-2012

It is with tremendous sadness that we report the passing of Janice Weiss on August 24 at 92. TAP is 40 this year, and she was the magazine’s original publisher who retired several years ago from full-time service and worked as a consultant the last several years on a part-time basis. Janice, who was vibrant and busy until her death, also worked for the previous owners, serving an amazing 49 years with the organization.  She will be greatly missed by the magazine’s staff and the many amusement industry vendors who received outstanding customer service and the special personal touch that defined doing business with Janice.
I hope you enjoy the issue. Please email me at editortapmag@kanec.com with comments, questions and suggestions.
